After completing a BA Honours degree at Lancaster University in Sociology, Psychology and the Disabled Individual (1983) I joined Essex Social Services as a Child Care Officer. In 1986 managed a Community Care Dept. in Suffolk, teaching City & Guilds level training (child care) to 16 – 18 year olds on Training Schemes. After a year in Suffolk, I returned to Essex Social Services in a management position again working with children. Following a career break to have my own two children, I returned to Social Services for a further 18 months, before leaving to form my own company in 1994, PPK Training. The main activities of this business include consultancy work, quality development and staff training throughout East Anglia. In 1998 I completed NVQ Level 3 Child Care & Education and am also a NVQ Assessor. In 2007 I was one of the first people in the county to be awarded Early Years Professional Status following completion of a pilot course at Middlesex University and continue to work with the University to assess new EYPS students.
My drive to open Pebbles, stems primarily from my own two children, who spent three years at a quality Kindergarten and could not have had a better start to their lives. I watched them grow into confident, articulate 5 year olds with real educational competence, but more importantly independent young boys who were (and still are) confident to express their views and and wishes.
I believe this was developed from their earlier experiences within a friendly, non-imposing child-centered environment. I wanted to open a nursery in Clacton offering all children the same opportunity to have fun and learn through play: to develop confidence and find their voice and to realise how valued they are.
For myself it has been important to never expand the setting too much as I always to know all the children and families individually so that I can ensure they all receive the best tailor made service. I am delighted that in 2015 my sons and husband have joined the business offering behind the scenes admin and IT support and my daughter in law has joined me in the office to learn the business at the point of delivery.
